June 2021 Update

Pride month is coming to an end, but pride never ends! This was a busy busy month for me with my accelerated summer class but oh boy did I learn a lot and LOVE the portfolio work I created! I think this is my favorite class in the Publishing arm of my program by far: Promoting Children’s Books. Thanks to this class, I was able to read classics and learn the reasons behind their success as books and as products marketed towards different people. Also, I had a great excuse to start reading R.L. Stine since I was too scared as a kid to read his stories. (But I would bop along to the Goosebumps show opening before I switched the channel; I think I watched a couple of those late at night.)

For my goals this past month, I kept up with my schoolwork as I hoped and continued regularly streaming on my Twitch channel although I skipped on finals week because I needed that block of time. I wrote a little tasting of a book idea I had, but otherwise, I didn't write all that much in my free time. I was able to draw a lot and keep creating so I’m happy with that at least.

Media of the Month

I READ:

99 Fear Street: The First Horror by R.L. Stine

Guilty Pleasures: An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novel by Laurell K. Hamilton

I WATCHED:

My Hero Academia Digimon Adventure (2020)

Digimon Tri: Reunion

The Way of the Househusband

Erased The Promised Neverland

The Lost Boys

I LISTENED:

Last Podcast on the Left

Internet Urban Legends

Inside (The Songs) by Bo Burnham

Omori

Obey Me! One Master to Rule Them All!

Goal(s) for July

Continue drawing and hopefully post my animatic I’m working on! I’ll probably be writing in my Graphic Novel class so I’m excited to see what I produce in that class. I’ve been considering making my one WIP a graphic novel so I hope I’ll be able to come to a conclusion with the help of this class. Also I’ll be writing the proposal for my MA thesis so that’s a very important goal! So far the general topic is transgender literature in the children’s publishing realm.

Featured Creator/Business of the Month

For June's featured creator of the month, I chose to highlight Astronym, a Texas-based illustrator and artist whose style is informed by classic animes and bright colors. Her color theory skills are off the charts to create intended bright aesthetics even when using darker colors of the spectrum. Astronym also has a strong sense of narrative that she showcases especially in her short comics mostly inspired by her own life experiences. They are loving, informative, and fun, shining through any screen you view them on.

Astronym can be found all across the web on Instagram, Twitter, Ko-fi, Patreon, Facebook, Twitch, Webtoon, and on Threadless where you can buy her artwork on different clothes and accessories! Her commissions are open and you can find more information about them here.

So that's that on that! Stay tuned for more. We'll see what I cook up for the rest of the year.

Stay happy, safe, and healthy! Make some good out there!
